The Emmy-nominated Netflix film, I Am Vanessa Guillen explored the tragic loss of Army soldier Vanessa Guillen and her family’s effort to fight for sweeping changes to the military justice system in honor of life.

The Guillen family and their supporters successfully campaigned to pass federal legislation to better protect victims of sexual misconduct in the military. The I Am Vanessa Guillén Act fundamentally transformed how the U.S. military handles sexual assault and harassment by removing prosecution decisions from the local chain of command, criminalizing sexual harassment as a specific offense under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), and mandating independent investigations.
